How To Watch Scary Movies Even Though You're Scared Of Them

That’s not to say they aren’t still frightening - The Shining still gets me! But there are plenty of older titles are cinematically fascinating and less terrifying to watch. Try some of the early black-and-white monster movies, like Dracula as portrayed by Bela Lugosi (see above). Back in the day, these were the films that gave audiences goosebumps, but they might not have that same effect on you, making them safe to watch.

It’s no secret - any scary movie worth its salt has an equally scary soundtrack to boost the intensity and suspense in a scene. Take that away, maybe add some inappropriately funny music or another movie’s audio, and let the good times roll. Suddenly, those horrifying scenes become comedy gold! You’ll never see that film the same way again.

Do zombies freak you out? Then why would you watch a movie about them devouring human brains? Find a nice slasher flick! Do serial killers give you nightmares? Watch a haunted house feature. There are so many horror films about so many different things that go bump in the night, you’re bound to find something that doesn’t haunt you for life.

While horror is meant to be enjoyed in the creepiest of settings, nothing is more fun than screaming and hiding behind furniture with your friends! You can cling to each other during creepy reveals, and then when it’s all over, laugh at how cheesy the effects were. Just make sure you do something fun afterwards so that your mind is on the great time you’re having, and not on how realistic those bleeding walls looked.

Even people who love scary movies get scared by them - that’s the point! The adrenaline rush, the harrowing suspense, peaking through your hands to catch a glimpse at the monster, all of this is in the name of having a good time! Keep that in perspective and it’ll be a lot easier to sit through the entire thing.

Almost all movie monsters, ghost, ghouls, and demons have a human face behind them somewhere. They are designed to look disturbing and freaky, but just remember there’s a person under there making goofy faces, sweating heavily under all that make up. Just imagine them underneath all that making those silly grunts and scowls, and you’ll find yourself not so scared anymore of that deformed mermaid.

Or really any everyday situation. I know it sounds really weird, but it does actually work! Imagine Jason going to a laundromat. Imagine a demon filing taxes. Imagine Damian from The Omen prank-ordering a pizza to that girl from The Ring. The ultimate object of the exercise is to make the character seem so mundane and ridiculous, they are no longer scary. This trick works especially well when you’re in your room at night, alone and in the dark.
